The Isla Holbox Spay Neuter Project was founded in 2008 by Kim Morgan, a licensed veterinary technician who is passionate about alleviating the suffering caused by companion animal overpopulation. Kim and her husband Ed live in Washington state but have left their hearts on the island of Holbox, off the northern tip of the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula. It is here, and in the surrounding mainland villages of the state of Quintana Roo, that IHSNP does its work.
Our goal is to not only provide free, high quality animal sterilization to impoverished communities, but also to train local veterinarians and animal advocacy groups to implement their own ongoing spay and neuter efforts in these areas, thus working toward permanent, locally based solutions.
We also work with a team of local volunteers to reach out to schools, where students are being taught the importance of animal population control and animal husbandry. This is the first opportunity for many children to learn about their pets. We believe that educating young people about animal sterilization and responsible pet ownership is the key to stopping the cycle of neglect that has formed due to lack of knowledge and limited recourses.
